Family Counseling Services Model

The Center for Family Life provides individual, group and family counseling services for neighborhood children, youth and families. The Family Counseling Program was among the first Center for Family Life programs in Sunset Park, and it continues to be integral to the Center's functioning today. The Program uses an ecological model of intervention that focuses on the value of human relatedness and of authentic, supportive communication in family life. Counseling also involves advocacy and referrals for benefits and services that can contribute to household stabilization.

The Center's service model does not rely upon a single modality of intervention or an attempt to “remediate” without recognizing existing strengths and competencies. Interventions build on individual and family strengths, and support for participation in positive, normative life experiences is at the core of the Center's counseling model. Families are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities, which can include individual, family and couple's counseling, group activities and community activities both at and outside of the Center.
